ELLA, SUZY, and LENA – Three KLEMM drilling rigs in operation at the Rodde Lock

Our long-standing customer GUP (Geotechnische Untersuchungen und Projekte GmbH) from Isernhagen, Germany. recently commissioned its new KLEMM anchor drilling rig KR 806-3GS, named ELLA, at the major construction site of the Rodde Lock. With this addition, ELLA joins the two KLEMM drilling rigs, SUZY and LENA, which were already working on-site. In total, three powerful KLEMM rigs are now in operation.

High-performance drilling for the Rodde Lock
Within just 5 months, the three rigs will drill approximately 45,000 running meters of micropiles using the double-head flushing drilling method. Some of these piles serve as tiebacks for sheet pile walls, while others must even be drilled from a floating pontoon. However, the majority of the drilled piles will secure the future 4,000 m² lock chamber floor against uplift.

ELLA impresses with state-of-the-art technology
The new KR 806-3GS is fully radio-controlled and also features an additional operator platform. Thanks to powerful drilling drives combined with KLEMM EEP technology and PowerSharing, drilling depths of up to 50 meters can be achieved – all with extremely efficient diesel consumption! The drill rods are safely and efficiently inserted using mini excavators and rod manipulators.

Rodde Lock – Part of a major inland navigation project
The Dortmund-Ems Canal (DEK) is a key waterway for freight transport between the North Sea and the Ruhr region. The construction of the new Rodde Lock is part of the large-scale project “New Locks DEK-North”, which replaces and modernizes several outdated lock systems. After the planned completion in 2028, the new Rodde Lock will allow the passage of larger cargo ships, making a significant contribution to the sustainable transformation of transport and logistics.
